Outlook XP or 2003 migration

I am having problems migrating my contacts from Outlook XP or 2003 to GW 6.5. It seems to migrate the mail ok and the contact folders but no contacts. The log file shows the total number of contacts but 0 migrated. Any ideas what might be wrong.

With contacts in excess of 300, we are aware of significant slowdown in the migration process. However, yours is the first report of a failure to migrate contacts.

The ‘access violation’ error message suggests to me there might be a problem with your GroupWise client. Perhaps you could try reinstalling?

We would appreciate your sending us more data to assist in analyzing this problem. If you wish to do so, please send an email to support@advansyscorp.com, including the following:

• Formativ configuration. You can obtain this by going to Help on the GroupWise main menu; select About Formativ…; when the dialog appears go to the Configuration tab and click Copy to clipboard. Then paste the text in the body of your email.
• Your Outlook Contacts folder. Advansys treats all data provided by clients as strictly confidential. If you are using a .PST file, attach a zipped (compressed) copy of this file, if no bigger than around 1Mb; otherwise, we have an FTP address you can upload to. If not using a .PST file, the easiest way to do this is to export the Contacts folder to a CSV file, and include the file as an attachment to your email. In Outlook, go to File -> Import & Export -> Export To a File -> Comma Separated Values (Windows) -> Select the contacts folder…

I found the problem to be a GW client issue. Once I got that worked out the migration went well. I did notice the slowdown as the migration took about 2 hours to complete but everything seemed to migrate over. Thanks for your help. Would it be possible in a future release to allow a user to choose which contacts to migrate without having to do them all at once?

It’s interesting that you mention a GroupWise ‘client issue.’ We are familiar with migration/synchronization issues being (in 98% of cases) related to the configuration of Outlook, or more specifically, Windows messaging.

I fixed the issue by completly removing Groupwise and WMS. I then reinstalled and everything worked ok. Now I am getting the issue again. Either no contacts are migrated or GW crashes with a “Access violation at address 535515D0 in module ‘GWCMA1.DLL’. Read of address 8004010F” error. I am very worried as we are getting ready to convert 800+ Outlook mailboxes to GW 6.5. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for explaining your method of fixing the problem.

We think that something in your system setup has changed since the reinstallation, leading to the reappearance of the error. It is possible that GroupWise and Outlook can update their respective WMS profiles without warning. This is why we recommend distinct profiles in Windows Messaging, one for GroupWise, one for Outlook. The GroupWise profile should use GroupWise-only services, and vice versa for Outlook.

Could you describe the behaviour of Personal Outlook Migration in both scenarios? That is:
(a) no contacts migrated, and
(b) GW crashes.

Specifically, at what point in the process does the ‘Access violation…’ message appear? Can you provide a log that corresponds to each scenario? You can limit the time it takes to test this by restricting the migration to Contacts only. You can produce a more detailed log by holding down the SHIFT key as you execute Personal Outlook Migration. Ideally, we would prefer that you send log data and Formativ configuration data to support@advansyscorp.com.

We have been doing migrations from Outlook XP to GW 6.5 over the last few days. Everything is pulling over except Contacts. The log shows that it recognizes that the contact entries are there “Contacts to be migrated: 255” but the next entry in the log shows “Contacts migrated: 0”. No error messages or Groupwise crashes. I have reinstalled GW and the migration tools to no avail. Any other ideas?
