How to determine type of attachement – Advansys

Hi,

is anybody aware of a way to determine what type of file is attached to a message?

I’m already stripping all attachemnts into a specific directory, but I would like to split them based on file-type (like text, excel, word, etc.) Checking on file-extention is not save enough, I need a more solid solution.

I am not aware of any other way to determine attachment types, other than looking at the file extensions. What aspect of this approach is not robust enough?

Our employees are expected to send time-sheet (which is in excel) to HQ as attachement. It turns out that we receive quite a number of files which has been saved without the extention, so I would like to determine the filetype based on the contents of the file.

On a linux machine I could use the file-command to give the file-type, but on windows/formativ?

There is no inherent method in Formativ that will tell you the file type based on the content of a file. I suspect you would need to investigate the third party market for a tool that identifies files based on content.
