Overview |
Advansys Formativ is
fully Novell eDirectory/NDS
enabled, which means you can use Novell eDirectory/NDS to centrally
manage Formativ within your organization, saving you time and money.
What's more, tools and documentation are included that makes mass deployment
using Novell ZENworks or the GroupWise AddOn facility simple.
From a
central location you can easily:
 Deploy Formativ to
hundreds or thousands of users desktops
Control which
Formativ features are enabled for individuals, groups, organization units or
organizations
Share corporate
applets to individuals, groups, organization units or organizations
The
eDirectory/NDS management features that ship with Formativ mean you
never have to leave your desk to configure the Formativ client on your
user's computers, and distribute corporate applets, regardless of whether you
have 10 or 10,000 users!
The ability to manage Formativ directly from eDirectory/NDS, using tools with which your administration personnel are already familiar, dramatically increases the return on investment you can expect from

| Managing
Formativ |
Advansys Formativ is
a fully eDirectory/NDS aware application that can be centrally managed using
either Novell's NWAdmin or ConsoleOne tools. These are the same tools used by
GroupWise and Netware administrators around the world to manage their networks,
so administrators will be instantly familiar with the Formativ management
environment.
The Formativ eDirectory Tools,
available here
 ,
consist of a setup program and documentation. The setup program extends your
eDirectory/NDS schema and installs NWAdmin and ConsoleOne snapins.
When
you install the eDirectory Tools, three new object definitions are added to
your eDirectory/NDS schema:
Formativ
Configuration Object
Formativ Applet
Library Object
Formativ Applet
Object
These three objects are created and managed by NWAdmin/ConsoleOne, and used by Formativ on each workstation. Full details can be found in the Formativ Studio Guide, which is installed with Formativ Studio.
The key object in regards to management is the
Formativ Configuration Object. The Formativ Configuration object
contains the settings that the Formativ client uses on startup. These settings
include:
If Formativ is
enabled/disabled
If shared applets
should be cached for each session
If GroupWise applet
integrations are enabled
If Formativ should
be enabled when using GroupWise Remote
If and how the
Formativ menu appears in the GroupWise client
Which shared
applets have been allocated to users of this configuration
A Configuration Object may be used by a single user, the members of a Group, the members of an Organization Unit or an entire organization. You can create as many Configuration Objects as you like, which provides maximum flexibility. For example, you may create one Configuration Object for power users that allows for the creation of personal applets, and another for other users that are not permitted to create their own applets. In addition, you may want both groups of users to share the same corporate applets. This scenario is illustrated below:
The combination and placement of Formativ eDirectory/NDS
Configuration and Applet Library objects within your tree dictate how your
Formativ environment works. The combinations and possibilities are endless. You
can choose to have a very simple setup with only one Configuration object and
one Applet Library object at the top of your tree, or a number of Configuration
and Applet Library objects in order to provide various levels of Formativ
security and capabilities within your organization.

| Deploying
Formativ |
Formativ can be installed on any number of workstations using conventional manual techniques. However, this can be a costly exercise. In response to this problem, Advansys provides Formativ Distribution Resources, which makes distribution
easy.

Novell GroupWise
AddOn.CFG files
Documentation
These resources make it very easy
to use either Novell ZENworks or the GroupWise program distribution facility to
roll out the Formativ client to large numbers of desktops within your
organization.
The ZENworks AXT file can be used to create ZEN
application objects that automatically install Formativ to the desktop. The
GroupWise AddOn.CFG file makes Formativ appear to be another option in a
standard GroupWise client installation.
