General

General EPOC Connect/PsiWin instability

As there are a wide range of PC environments, under some circumstances, EPOC Connect/PsiWin synchronization can become unreliable. The following is a troubleshooting procedure which may assist eliminate a source of instability. Depending on which '.stm' files that you move, this procedure will result in the disabling of the auto-starting of the CopyAnywhere feature, the auto-sync, auto-backup facility and printing from the Psion via the PC.

  • Using the Windows File Explorer, find the EPOC Connect/PsiWin program directory. PsiWin normally resides in the C:\Program Files\Psion\PsiWin directory.

  • Create a temporary storage directory under the PsiWin program directory. In fact, the new directory can be created in any location you prefer and named anything that you like. Creating it under the PsiWin program directory may be more convenient (i.e. C:\Program Files\Psion\PsiWin\Temp) and easier to locate again.

  • Ensure that your PsiWin connection server or PsiWin is not running. You may need to close the PsiWin connection server from the System tray '~' icon.

  • Find all files ending in the '.stm' extension and move them to the directory you created in step 2) above. These files are usually CpyStart.stm, pwbkauto.stm and wprtsv.stm. It is important that these '.stm' files no longer reside in your PsiWin program directory.

  • Use EPOC Connect/PsiWin again and see if the operational stability problems are improved or resolved. If not, and you wish to use the CopyAnywhere, auto backup, auto sync or printing facilities, move the files back into the EPOC Connect/PsiWin program directory. You may wish to move them one at a time and check EPOC Connect/PsiWin operation.

If you have moved the CpyStart.stm file, which auto-starts CopyAnywhere, you can start it manually by starting the Copyany.exe file, which resides the EPOC Connect/PsiWin program directory. You could also create a shortcut to the file.

If you do not wish the EPOC Connect/PsiWin connection server to start automatically when you start your PC, you can remove the startup icon from your Windows Startup folder (Start|Programs|Startup). If you do this, when you initiate a synchronization or attempt to access your Psion via Explorer, you will need to wait a few seconds until the connection server is started. You can then choose to leave it running or shut it down again by accessing the right mouse context menu on the connection server System tray '~' icon.
